Abstract

Introduction: The esthesioneuroblastoma or olfactory neuroblastoma is a malignant infrequent tumor, and it accounts for 3% of all intranasal neoplasms. It is derived from the olfactory neuroepithelium in the cribriform region of the nasal fossa, its main symptoms are nasal obstruction, epistaxis, anosmia, headache and sinusitis.

Objective: To report the case of a patient with a diagnosis of esthesioneuroblastoma.

Clinical case report: We report the case of a 34-year-old female patient with history of arterial hypertension, who came to the hospital emergency room due to unilateral left nasal bleeding of variable intensity, which was not always accompanied by high blood pressure levels. Evolutionarily, during the course of the disease, the physical examination revealed a tumor-like lesion at the level of the middle turbinate in the left anterior rhinoscopy, which appears to be of ethmoidal origin.

Conclusions: The evolution of a patient with olfactory neuroblastoma is very nonspecific given its location, which makes its early diagnosis difficult. Endoscopic endonasal treatment has shown excellent survival results with reduction in complications. Most patients with esthesioneuroblastoma are diagnosed in advanced stages and its optimal management depends on the cooperation between clinicians, surgeons, imaging specialists, and pathologists to establish the diagnosis and plan the therapeutic strategy.
