Prevalence of Otorhinolaryngological Symptoms in COVID-19 Patients

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 is a new type of Coronavirus that belongs to the sub-family of Orthocoronavirinae. Its infection can be light, moderate, or so severe that it can lead to death, would it disease localize only in the lungs or involve other organs can give diverse symptomatology.
Objective: To show the characteristics of this disease and the prevalence of otorhinolaryngological symptoms.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in 114 COVID19 patients at Cristóbal Labra polyclinic in La Lisa, from March to September 2020. The variables used were sex, age, comorbidity, relationship between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients and more frequent symptoms. Descriptive statistics analysis was complete.
Results: The most affected sex was male (51.8%) between 19-59 years (76.3%). Hypertension was the predominant comorbidity (22.8%), evident in women (12.3%), age ranged 19 to 59 years. Sixty-eight (68) patients (59.6%) were symptomatic, predominantly men (32.4%), ranging 19 to 59 years of age (23.6%). The most frequent symptoms were fever (89.6%), headache (77.9%), rhinorrhea (74.9%), nasal congestion (66.1%) and sore throat (54.4%).
Conclusions: It was possible to determine the characteristics of this disease and the prevalence of otorhinolaryngological symptoms, which ranked third in frequency in the group studied, however they were not significant at this stage of the pandemic. Symptomatic cases predominated over asymptomatic ones.
