Clinical Epidemiological Behavior of Head and Neck Cancer

Introduction: The head and neck area comprises important anatomical structures. Starting site of the respiratory-digestive tract which contains oral cavity, pharynx, nasal passages, paranasal sinuses, larynx and salivary glands. In addition, they include tumors of the skin, soft tissues, bones, neurovascular structures, and malignant thyroid and parathyroid lesions. Conditions in these regions are a frequent reason for consultation at Dr. Salvador Allende Clinical Surgical Hospital.
Objective: To describe the clinical-epidemiological behavior of head and neck cancer in patients who attended the otolaryngology consultation at this Hospital.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, ambispective study was fulfilled from January 2015 to December 2019. The universe consisted of 186 patients and the sample involved 111, who met the inclusion criteria. Sociodemographic variables, location, risk factor, symptoms, staging, histological type, degree of differentiation and oncological treatment were studied.
Results: The age groups of 61-70 years old and males prevailed. The location in the larynx was the most frequent and smoking was the most common risk factor. Dysphagia was the most frequent symptom. Most of the patients were diagnosed in the initial stages with epithelial histological type, moderately differentiated degree, and received combined treatment.
Conclusions: Smoking is closely related to head and neck cancer. The most frequent location was found in the larynx. Treatment depends on the location and clinical stage of the tumor.
