Abstract

Introduction: Numerous diseases can affect the salivary glands, the study of their behavior constitutes one of the most complex problems of head and neck tumor lesions.

Objective: To describe the behavior of salivary gland tumor diseases in patients treated at the Otolaryngology consultation at General Calixto García University Hospital.

Method: An observational, descriptive, ambispective longitudinal study was carried out. All patients who attended the Otorhinolaryngology consultation with increased volume of the salivary glands were chosen as a universe.

Results: The parotid gland was the most affected gland. The main clinical symptom was pain, all patients referring increase in volume in the salivary gland. Pleomorphic adenoma predominated followed by Whartin's tumor; there were only 19.6% complications. The female sex predominated between the fifth and sixth decade of life. The risk factors were smoking and alcohol-consumption habits.

Conclusions: Our experience agrees in many respects with the literature reviewed. Salivary gland tumors predominate in the parotid gland and the benign ones are the most frequent. They occur more in female adults.
