Abstract

Introduction: The severity of childhood hearing loss is determined by the time of its appearance and by its intensity, for which its presence at birth and during the first years of life affects the development of language and voice, the structuring of thinking, emotional, social and school development of the child.

Objective: To describe the behavioral tests that are used in the audiological evaluation in children.

Methods: A bibliographic review was carried out following the PRISMA guidelines of the literature published in the databases PubMed, SciELO, Elsevier, Science Direct and the Google Scholar search engine.

Analysis and synthesis of information: The diagnosis of hearing impairment includes the topographical determination of the lesion and the degree of hearing loss, and contributes to defining the medical-surgical treatment, the use of hearing aids (hearing aids or cochlear implant), rehabilitation language and educational strategies.

Conclusions: Subjective audiometric tests are of great value in the diagnosis of residual hearing in children; and in combination with objective tests, they are a basic link in the audiological evaluation protocol. The diagnosis of hearing deficit includes the topographical determination of the lesion and the degree of hearing loss, and helps to define the medical-surgical treatment, the use of hearing aids (hearing aids or cochlear implants), language rehabilitation and educational strategies.
