Abstract

Introduction: Auditory verbal therapy seeks to improve the spoken language skills of children with hearing impairments to the level of a child with typical hearing, through the development of listening practices (independent of the use of other techniques such as speech reading and gestures). It focuses on the context of spoken communication within the family and uses hearing and speaking as the primary methods of communication. Through this approach, the child with hearing loss learns to develop hearing as an active sense, so that the listening process becomes automatic.

Objective: Guide the family of children with hearing loss for correct participation during auditory verbal therapy.

Methods: An exhaustive bibliographic review was carried out. Classic literature of the specialty and Google Scholar were consulted as a search engine for scientific information.

Conclusions: Auditory verbal therapy constitutes a style of family interaction and should be practiced daily. This support is essential to help the child reach typical age-related milestones in speech and language acquisition.
