High-frequency Audiometry in Normal-hearing Children from 6 to 10 Years of Age
Keywords:
high frequency audiometry, children, ambient acoustic noise.Abstract
Introduction: High frequency audiometry (9000-20,000 Hertz) can be very useful in the early diagnosis of noise-induced hearing loss.
Objective: Determine high frequency hearing thresholds in normal hearing children from 6 to 10 years of age.
Methods: A study with a cross-sectional descriptive design was carried out, consisting of children exposed to the usual ambient noise of acoustic pollution in their daily living environment. The sample was 85 children belonging to the Primary School: “Lidia Doce”, who were in grades 1 to 6, located in the Marianao municipality, in the province of Havana
Results: In both ears it can be seen that the hearing threshold is normal up to 17,000 Hz, with an increase starting at the frequency of 18,000 Hz, with less than 5 dB difference between both ears, reaching 60 dB with the same increase in threshold. at 20,000 Hz. Threshold values were expressed from the 50th percentile.
Conclusions: Since research in Cuba on high-frequency audiometry in children was not found in the reviewed literature, this study could be used as a reference for hearing threshold at this age, to prevent hearing loss and take health measures in this regard.
