Abstract

Introduction: Leprosy or Hansen's disease is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae; Although it primarily affects the skin and the peripheral nervous system, other organs can also suffer its effects.

Objective: To describe the pharyngeal and nasal manifestations in a patient with lepromatous leprosy.

Clinical case: A 53-year-old white male patient with a history of diagnosis of lepromatous leprosy presented with frequent epistaxis, nasal obstruction with fetid mucopurulent discharge and crust formation, and marked paleness of the mucosa in the palate in the oropharynx, with amputation of the uvula. The thickening of the earlobes is striking.

Conclusions: Lepromatous leprosy with incidences in other organs in addition to the skin is a condition that, relatively frequently, is seen in patients with this disease and, despite medical advances, it is a reality that has not been able to be eradicated worldwide. Patients who suffer from it are still socially stigmatized, which is why health personnel must have minimal knowledge about it and its manifestations at different levels of the body, thus preventing its spread through early diagnosis.
