Introduction: Endoscopic sinonasal surgery is the intervention of sinonasal disease through the use of the endoscope. It is a minimally invasive procedure converted into a useful surgical tool.
Objective: Determine the frequency of surgical complications in patients treated by endoscopic sinonasal approaches.
Methods: A prospective longitudinal descriptive study was carried out. The universe consisted of 233 patients operated on by endoscopic nasal and paranasal sinus surgery in the Otorhinolaryngology Service of the “General Calixto García Iñiguez” University Hospital in the period from January 2019 to January 2023, of which 57 patients (24.5 %) were those who presented complications.
Results: The male sex was the most affected (154 patients for 66%). The male to female ratio was 2:1. The age group between 50 and 59 years had a higher frequency with a mean age of 51.23. The complication rate was 24.5%. Malignant and benign nasal tumors were more likely to present complications. The most common minor complication was turbineseptal synechiae. The more complex techniques had a higher rate of complications.
Conclusions: Endoscopic endonasal approaches reported a low rate of complications. The diseases most likely to become complicated were benign and malignant nasal and paranasal tumors. Minor complications were the most frequently found intraoperatively and postoperatively. The complexity of the surgical technique used was related to a higher frequency of complications.
