Submental Flap in the Reconstruction of Oncological Defects in the Head and Neck
Keywords:
myocutaneous flap, surgical flaps, squamous cell carcinoma.Abstract
Introduction: Martin et al in 1990 described the submental flap in the reconstruction of facial defects. Clinical and experimental studies have shown that this flap is versatile in its pedicled or free microsurgical variant and its refinement has allowed greater versatility in its design.
Objective: To present, through clinical cases, the usefulness of the submental flap in the reconstruction of oncological defects in the head and neck.
Clinical case: First case: 62-year-old female patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the right cheek (T3 N0 M0). The defect was reconstructed with a pedicled myocutaneous flap from the submental artery, without complications. Second case: 74-year-old female patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the left lip and cheek (T3 N0 M0). The defect was reconstructed with a pedicled myocutaneous flap from the submental artery; there were no complications. Third case: 75-year-old male patient with recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the left retroauricular region (T3 N0 M0). The defect was reconstructed with a myocutaneous pedicled flap from the submental artery, without complications.
Conclusions: The submental flap is a safe, effective reconstructive option with a low rate of complications, accompanied by good aesthetic and functional results. This technique has a high success rate and is the ideal surgical option for oncological defects in the head and neck, especially in elderly patients.
