Thyroglossal Cyst of the Base of the Tongue

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: Thyroglossal cyst is a congenital malformation associated with a lack of involution of the thyroglossal duct. Its incidence is predominant in childhood, with the base of the tongue being a very rare site for the cyst to present.

Objective: To present the clinical aspects of a pediatric patient with a thyroglossal cyst at the base of the tongue.

Clinical case: An 8-year-old female patient with a medical history presented with dysphagia and an enlarged base of the tongue. Several excisions and biopsies of the lesion were performed. Due to further recurrences, radiological examinations were indicated and a thyroglossal cyst was confirmed in the posterior right portion of the base of the tongue, with a fusiform appearance. The patient was referred to the endoscopic surgery service of William Soler Hospital for correct endoscopic resection.

Conclusions: Due to the unusual nature of this location, it is essential to consider it, perform an accurate diagnosis, and complete excision of the duct to prevent subsequent recurrences.
