Clinical Characterization of Temporomandibular Disorders

Abstract

Introduction: Temporomandibular disorders are a set of musculoskeletal conditions that affect the temporomandibular joint, chewing muscles and adjacent anatomical structures; with great variability in its clinical presentation.

Objective: To characterize temporomandibular disorders according to clinical and socio-demographic aspects.

Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. It shows 108 patients with temporomandibular dysfunction.

Results: Females predominated (55%), and ages between 19 and 39 years (51%), the main risk factors were malocclusion (75%), stress (61%), bruxism (52%) and trauma (20%). Most patients had pain at mouth opening (94%) as the main clinical manifestation, with a mild degree of dysfunction (48%).

Conclusions: Temporomandibular disorders present with a wide variety of symptoms that require multidisciplinary management for their analysis, to combine complementary and therapeutic procedures essential for the improvement of patients, although the clinical method is the main tool for their diagnosis.
