The Role of Prosody in Children´s Communication and its Most Frequent Alterations
Abstract
Introduction: From the first years of life, children develop communication skills that allow them to interact appropriately with their environment and guarantee optimal comprehensive performance with the acquisition of new skills. Among them, the mastery of the prosodic aspects of the language stands out.
Objective: Determine the role of prosody in children’s communication and the most frequent alterations at this stage.
Methods: A search was conducted in the PubMed, LILACS, SciELO and Google Scholar databases from June 2023 to July 2024, in English and Spanish of scientific articles published in last five years corresponding to the topic of prosody and its alterations in childhood.
Conclusions: Prosody plays an essential role in children's communication, as it fosters language expression and comprehension. It develops from an early age and requires interaction between children and adults, imitating their intonational habits. Prosodic alterations found in pediatric patients with autism spectrum disorders, Asperger's syndrome, hearing loss, intellectual disability, and language delays due to overexposure to electronic screens require timely management.
Keywords: prosody; child communication; accent; intonation; dysprosody.
