Disability Caused by Tinnitus
Abstract
Introduction: Tinnitus is the conscious perception of a sound in one or both ears that is not attributed to an external source. It is a symptom secondary to almost all ear disorders or a manifestation of systemic diseases. It is one of the most frequent reasons for consultation in otorhinolaryngology and gradually incapacitates patients who suffer from it.
Objective: To determine the degree of disability caused by tinnitus.
Methods: A prospective, descriptive, observational, and longitudinal study was conducted in 113 patients treated in the Otorhinolaryngology Department of the Calixto García Hospital from 2021 to 2023.
Results: The female sex predominated (65.5%), with an average age of 60-69 years (31%). The main comorbidities included high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus; associated symptoms included hearing loss and vertigo. Regarding the characterization of tinnitus, 100% was subjective, and 57.5% was bilateral.
Conclusions: The degree of disability is significantly associated with the involvement of high-pitched tones, as well as hearing loss and vertigo as associated symptoms.
