Chronic otitis media with osteitics. Correlation of surgical findings with computed tomographies
Abstract
Introduction: Chronic osteitic otitis media is a septic-inflammatory process, the infection can go beyond the limits of the middle ear and extend to adjacent regions, computed tomography is a very useful tool in this disease.
Objective: To determine the correlation of the surgical finding with that described in the computed axial tomography in patients with chronic osteitic otitis media.
Method: An observational, descriptive, longitudinal, prospective study was carried out on patients with chronic osteitic otitis media treated in the Otorhinolaryngology Service of the "General Calixto García" University Hospital, during the period from December 2019 to October 2022. The universe consisted of 64 patients and the sample was made up of 33 who met the established inclusion criteria.
Results: Females predominated, with an average age of 28.9 ± 3.8 years. The most frequent findings and extent of damage in tomographic studies were ossicular chain injury and damage to the tympanic cavity extending to all cavities
Conclusions: Computed tomography is a useful tool for the detection of middle ear lesions in patients with chronic osteitic otitis media, as it predominantly showed very good agreement with surgical results.
