Surgical and radiotherapeutic treatment of head and neck soft tissue sarcomas

Abstract

Introduction: Soft tissue sarcomas in the head and neck are malignant tumors that originate in the so-called connective tissue, from the embryonic mesenchyme, and they are located in the soft tissues.

Objective: To broaden our knowledge of the surgical and radiotherapeutic treatment of head and neck soft tissue sarcomas.

Methods: A search was carried out in PubMed, Cumed databases, among others, on everything related to current knowledge about surgical and radiotherapeutic treatment of soft tissue sarcomas in the head and neck, performing an analysis of the articles in the different publications.

Conclusions: Soft tissue sarcomas located in the head and neck are a heterogeneous group of tumors, rare, aggressive and with different types of presentation. The main treatment with curative intent is surgical resection in order to obtain negative margins. Radiation therapy is another widely used modality, when combined with surgery it can improve the global
