Sensorineural hearing loss in patients with chronic renal failure receiving hemodialysis

Introduction: There are discrepancies regarding the relationship between hemodialysis treatment and the appearance of sensorineural hearing loss in patients with Chronic Renal Insufficiency.
Objective: To describe sensorineural hearing loss in patients with chronic kidney failure undergoing hemodialysis replacement therapy.
Methods: A descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was carried out. Descriptive statistical measures, Chi square test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used.
Results: Forty patients with average age of 54 ± 16.6 years were studied. 62.5% corresponded to the female sex for a male-female ratio of 0.6: 1. Among the causes of chronic renal failure, arterial hypertension prevailed in 21 patients (52.5%). Predominance of bilateral sensorineural hearing loss was found with greater involvement for high frequencies. The average time of hemodialysis treatment was 4 years ranging between 1 and 26 years; a relationship between the time on hemodialysis and the degree of hearing loss was not found.
Conclusions: There is high prevalence of bilateral sensorineural hearing loss that affects high frequencies in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis, which was not statistically significantly correlated with the cause of renal failure, or with the time of hemodialysis.
