Abstract

Introduction: Deep neck abscesses are frequently caused by odontogenic septic processes. Early diagnosis and proper medical behavior are important in order to avoid serious and lethal complications.

Objective: To report a case with dentoalveolar abscess with septic extension to the buccal and submandibular space diagnosed late.

Clinical case report: An 8-year-old female patient with a 19-day history of swelling of the neck and face. She had fever, as well as difficulty at opening her mouth and painful swallowing. On physical examination, there was volume increase of the left sub maxillary region, covered by purple, painful, fluctuating and hot skin.

Conclusions: Deep neck abscesses continue to have dental septic foci as frequent etiology. Early diagnosis and appropriate medical and surgical behavior are the only ways to avoid complications and to reduce morbidity and mortality in these patients. The existence of neck abscess in childhood should suggest odontogenic cause as one of the main reasons.
