Abstract

Audiology is a branch of the otorhinolaryngology specialty that is responsible for the study, diagnosis, and conduct of hearing-related disorders, especially deafness, hearing loss and balance. Data collects on personalities diagnosed with deafness since the 4th centuries BC; however, it was not until the 1940s that this term began to be used in publications, like the term audiologist. As technological advances in the last century, audiology has vertiginously escalated seeking to find the comfort of the patient who suffers from hearing loss or other diseases related to hearing. The objective of this paper is to present an investigation on the history of audiology, its beginnings and some biographical data of the personalities that have made history in its development. The theoretical method was used, particularly the logical and empirical historical, and documentary sources were reviewed. It is concluded that the knowledge of the history of the development of audiology and those responsible for the discovery of the different phenomena involved in this science, allows the systematic knowledge of the physiology of hearing.
