Abstract

Introduction: The Eustachian tube is a 4 cm long tube, which extends between the anterior or carotid wall of the tympanic cavity to the lateral wall of the nasopharynx. Its malfunction is called tubal dysfunction.

Objective: To know about tubal function tests.

Methods: Fifteen references on the subject were reviewed using both internet sources and classic texts of the specialty.

Analysis and synthesis of information: The Eustachian tube is a narrow, collapsible upper airway that connects the middle ear with the nasopharynx. It represents a complex structure that plays an important role in maintaining a healthy middle ear, necessary for normal hearing. Tubal dysfunction refers to the poor function of the auditory tube. Tubal tests are specific dynamic studies, which allow to know the functioning of this structure.

Conclusions: The study and management of tubal dysfunction is a subject in constant review in the literature and essential for evaluating and treating diseases of the middle ear. Through tubal function tests it is possible to determine the functionality of the auditory tube and the management of middle ear diseases in the population, at any stage of the life cycle.
