Abstract

Introduction: Otitis media comprises a group of complex infectious and inflammatory diseases that affect the middle ear.

Objective: To determine the degree of impairment of auditory function in pediatric patients with simple chronic otitis media by the use of videotoscopy and audiometry.

Methods: This was an applied, descriptive, transversal and observational research. The sample was non-probabilistic for convenience and 39 pediatric patients with simple chronic otitis media made up the sample. Information was obtained through observation, videotoscopy and audiometry.

Results: Hearing loss was predominantly mild conductive type (59%). The chronic tympanic lesion was unilateral (77%), the right ear was the most affected (69%). Videotoscopic examination showed essentially subtotal mesotympanic perforations (57%).

Conclusions: Simple chronic otitis media is one of the most common childhood infectious diseases worldwide. Early diagnosis and treatment prevent possible sequelae to assist in adulthood in the form of functional impairment.
