Abstract

Introduction: Deafness is a disability that leads to hearing rehabilitation. Conventional hearing aids are effective in treating hearing impairments, but some patients fail to recognize words. The cochlear implant is the alternative for these patients and with bimodal stimulation it considerably improves their quality of life.

Objective: To evaluate the health-related quality of life in patients with cochlear implants and bimodal stimulation in the province of Villa Clara.

Methods: A descriptive and observational research was carried out on quality of life in patients with cochlear implant and contralateral retro auricular prosthesis in Villa Clara province, using a specific questionnaire as a tool.

Results: 56.7% expressed high rate of verbal discrimination, 30% expressed adequate quality of life according to their social relationships, 30% of adequate response of self-confidence and 63.3% adequate level in relation to family life.

Conclusions: In Villa Clara province, the patients studied with cochlear implant and who satisfactorily enjoy the use of bimodality as an alternative to improve their hearing performance, report benefits in all the areas studied: verbal discrimination, social relationships, self-confidence and family life, which contributes significantly to improving their quality of life.
