Fibrous dysplasia of the sphenoid bone

Introduction: Fibrous dysplasia of the sphenoid bone is a disease that consists of the replacement of bone tissue by fibrous tissue.
Objective: To determine the importance of the diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia of the sphenoid.
Clinical case: A 39-year-old white female patient who attended the Otorhinolaryngology clinic due to hearing loss and tinnitus in the left ear. On physical examination, the presence of serous otitis media was confirmed. Simple Computerized Axial Tomography of the Skull was performed with 3-mm slices and of the ear with 0.75-mm slices, obtaining expansion and sclerosis of the greater wing of the sphenoid, in addition, an Audiometry test. who presented mixed hearing loss and in the tympanometry a Curve B was obtained.
Conclusions: Fibrous dysplasia is a benign pathology of the bone system, which, due to the symptoms it produces and because it is not very common, tends to be confused with other diseases, so it must be taken into account. Simple Computed Axial Tomography of the Skull is a fundamental complement for its diagnosis.
