Abstract

Introduction: Infectious mononucleosis is a disease that generally has a benign course, but it can sometimes cause inflammation of the pharyngeal lymphoid tissue and severe obstruction of the upper airway, putting the patient's life at risk. Objective: Delve into some aspects related to the management of severe obstruction of the upper airway in infectious mononucleosis Analysis and synthesis of information: Infectious mononucleosis is a clinical syndrome caused primarily by the Epstein-Barr virus. It is characterized by systemic symptoms such as malaise, fever, sore throat, and generalized lymphadenopathy. Health personnel caring for a child with this disease must bear in mind that when respiratory distress occurs, it can progress, requiring urgent control of the upper airway, for which there are currently several techniques. Conclusions: Although infectious mononucleosis is a disease with a low frequency of complications, doctors cannot be confident during its evolution. Health personnel caring for a child with this diagnosis must bear in mind that when upper respiratory distress occurs, it can progress, requiring urgent control of the upper airway.
