Clinical and epidemiological characterization of patients with pharyngolaryngeal reflux

Introduction: Pharyngolaryngeal reflux is a syndrome that is associated with several symptoms, among which the most frequent are dysphonia, vocal fatigue, chronic cough and hoarseness.
Objective: To clinically and epidemiologically characterize patients with pharyngolaryngeal reflux who come to the otorhinolaryngology clinic.
Methods: A prospective descriptive study was carried out in adult patients diagnosed with pharyngolaryngeal reflux in the Otorhinolaryngology clinic of the "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Surgical Clinical Hospital in the period between October 2017 and May 2020. The sample consisted of 118 patients.
Results: The average age of the patients was between 50 - 60 years, with predominance in the female sex, coffee consumption; gastritis, cough and dysphonia were the most frequent symptoms. Through oropharyngolaryngoscopy, the most frequent finding was erythema of the posterior wall of the pharyngolarynx. As a result of the evaluation of the symptoms caused by pharyngolaryngeal reflux, those with clinical signs of this alteration presented a greater symptom picture and therefore higher scores in the Reflux Symptom Index.
Conclusions: Pharyngolaryngeal reflux is a disease with a wide range of symptoms, which can appear in other conditions, therefore the symptoms have to be significant enough (that is, with a total RFS ≥ 7 points) and to make an accurate diagnosis, the pH-metry It would be the ultimate test.
