Abstract

Introduction: Vocal cord paralysis is a condition pathology that occurs relatively frequently, can be unilateral or bilateral.

Objective: Epidemiologically characterize the paralysis of the vocal chords.

Methods: An ambispective descriptive study of longitudinal section in patients diagnosed with cord paralysis members of the otorhinolaryngology service of the University Hospital “General Calixto García” in the period from December 2019 to January 2022.

Results. Of the 31 patients with vocal paralysis, 67.74 % were female. The predominant symptom was dysphonia (70.97 %). Involvement of the left vocal curve predominated (70.97 %). The most frequent cause reported. found was trauma (41.93 %) and almost half of the patients were sent to the speech therapy clinic (48.39 %).

Conclusions. Vocal paralysis occurs more frequently in females and around the 5th decade of life. The predominant clinical manifestation is dysphonia. Post-surgical, neoplastic and idiopathic etiology are highlighted. Speech therapy management was used and tracheotomy and cordectomy were used in surgeries.
