Abstract

of hearing loss in newborns.

Methods: A descriptive, observational, retrospective and longitudinal study was carried out with a sample of 6070 newborns who underwent universal hearing screening through otoacoustic emission.

Results: 5,934 newborns (97.7%) passed the test. Of the total number of patients studied, 68.3% had no risk factor. The largest number of cases investigated ranged between 36 and 48 h after birth. The most frequent risk factors were: use of ototoxic drugs, arterial hypertension and low weight. Of the group with risk factors, 3.94% did not pass the first otoacoustic emission and the second 0.57%. Of the group without risk factor, 1.44% did not pass the first otoacoustic emission and the second 0.19%. The rate was 0.98 x every 1000 newborns at sensorineural hearing loss. The program showed a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 97%. Of the cases studied, 50.3% were male.

Conclusions: These results are consistent with the reviewed literature and confirm the usefulness of Universal Auditory Screening using otoacoustic Emission for the early detection of hearing loss in the Newborn.
