Abstract

Introduction: Language, in the elderly, is a highly appreciated asset. In communicative approaches, pronunciation is only one of the parameters that ensures communicative effectiveness. For this reason, the exercise of the phonic aspect of the language must include the significant values of accent, intonation, rhythm and pauses; which is what we call prosody.

Objective: To evaluate the characteristics of prosody in older adults.

Methods: 101 older adults were studied, in the period from January 2019 to 2021. Clinical, acoustic, statistical, mathematical and theoretical methods were used.

Results: Regarding prosody, the most affected sex was the masculine, except in linguistic prosody-repetition, which behaved similarly in both sexes. The acoustic parameters presented a displacement of the tones of the female sex towards the bass and the masculine ones towards the treble, and a decrease in the maximum phonation time in both sexes.

Conclusions: The joint analysis of performance patterns of the patients showed evidence of difficulties between the ability to repeat and recognize both linguistic and emotional prosody; as well as in the acoustic parameters of the voice. Prosody interventions should not focus solely on the restoration of the altered process, but rather on the search for rehabilitative and preventive therapeutic alternatives that prevent the appearance of these alterations.
