Classification and diagnostic evaluation of congenital malformations of the ear

Abstract

Introduction: In recent decades there have been changes in the classification and diagnosis of ear malformations considering aspects such as epidemiology, etiology and, in particular, ear development. The incidence of ear malformations is approximately 1 in 3,800 newborns.


Objective: To describe the characteristics of congenital malformations of the external and middle ear, the epidemiology, classification and diagnostic methods.


Methods: Google Scholar was used as a scientific information search engine. Review and research articles from different databases were evaluated: PubMed, LILACS, Cochrane, SciELO and web pages in Spanish, Portuguese and English.


Conclusions: The study of patients with congenital malformations requires a multidisciplinary approach, where functional and anatomical evaluations are integrated. In young children, the use of evoked potentials is essential for the objective characterization of auditory thresholds, allowing the type of hearing loss to be classified. Their results are integrated to achieve a diagnosis of certainty and thus determine the best therapeutic option in each case.
