Vestibular manifestations in patients with cochlear implants
Keywords:
cochlear implant, vestibular dysfunction, vestibular function evaluation.Abstract
Introduction: The cochlear implant is already a treatment proposal confirmed as effective and safe in cases of severe and profound hearing loss for the pediatric population and adults.
The wide worldwide diffusion and the increase in indications for cochlear implants has produced a large number of publications in which the successful results are significant, but at the same time attention has been drawn to the need to preserve the so-called “residual hearing”, in addition to take into account the possible aggression to the organs of the vestibular system, after detecting a number of patients with post-surgical manifestations in the vestibular functions, especially in cases of bilateral implantation.
Objective: Describe the vestibular manifestations that appear in patients with cochlear implants.
Methods: Google Scholar was used as a scientific information search engine. Review and research articles from different databases were evaluated: PubMed and SciELO. 21 bibliographic citations were reviewed and only 12 responded to the interest of our work were used.
Conclusions: It is advisable to carry out a vestibular evaluation, which would help in the selection of the ear to intervene, in cases of unilateral implantation, and to provide a reference for post-surgical evaluations in all cases, and it should be studied to what extent the insertion of electrodes can affect the existing auditory reserve and the vestibular system.
