Abstract

Introduction: Temporomandibular dysfunction is considered an accumulation of clinical alterations that affect the masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joints and associated structures. The origin of functional disorders of the stomatognathic system is multifactorial and affects a very high percentage of the population.

Objective: To clinically and therapeutically describe the temporomandibular disorders.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, prospective, longitudinal study was carried out for clinical-therapeutic assessment of temporomandibular joint dysfunctions in the maxillofacial surgery service at "Dr. Carlos J. Finlay" Military Hospital.

Results: There was slight predominance of males (53.7%), with similar distribution of all age groups. The most frequent risk factor was occlusal interference (29.6%), showing joint pain in all patients of the sample. Wilkes stage III was the most common (38.9%) and pain was present mainly on scales 4 (35.2%) and 6 (31.5%).

Conclusions: Temporomandibular dysfunction is an underdiagnosed condition, which produces very varied symptomatology, which affects large part of the population and which, if properly treated, can evolve satisfactorily.

bruxism; Wilkes classification; arthrocentesis.
